David Warner on Will Pucovski, Marcus Harris and who should open the joke

Superstar hitter David Warner has declared Will Pucovski the “frontrunner” to open the bar alongside him when the Ashes series kicks off in December.

After undergoing reconstructive surgery on his injured right shoulder, Pucovski is nearing the return for Victoria at the Sheffield Shield level.

The 23-year-old’s comeback was postponed after a concussion during training earlier this month.

Pucovski had a test debut to remember last summer when he scored 62 against India in January just before his shoulder injury.

But with seasoned Marcus Harris well into the mix and veteran Usman Khawaja having been in shape recently for Queensland, Warner admits that selectors will have a lot to consider.

“I made a comment last year about Joe Burns, that I was wanting Joe Burns myself … that’s not the case,” he told 2GB’s. Radio Wide World of Sports.

“For me, it’s about giving opportunities to the people who deserve those opportunities.

“I think at the moment there are two guys sitting there waiting, they are Will Pucovski and Marcus Harris.

“We are obviously talking about Usman Khawaja, he has scored 150 recently, a senior player.”

But given Pucovski’s experience earlier this year, Warner tagged him as the favorite for the opening concert.

“There are opportunities for recruiters to choose whoever they want,” he added.

“Given that Pucovski was injured and was in the team, I think he is the favorite at this stage.”
