All the Games You Like Suck

All the Games You Like Suck
(Or: I'm Getting Old)
I don't think I've ever used this to actually blog and opine about things besides Gundams and Transformers.

That changes today, I apologize in advance.

There was a time in my life where I played a lot of videogames.  I don't mean a game here and there, I mean nearly every new big release for hours on end and sometimes to the point of crazy 100% completions.  I read every new EGM and Gamepro and jumped around to every new site and blog to get news, codes, reviews, anything and everything.  I ate up the hobby vigorously, spent time getting legitimately better at competitive games (Dance Dance Revolution, Super Smash Bros. Melee, etc.) and spent hours upon end finishing up the latest JRPGs.  This lasted from 1996 (I was 11) and went on pretty consistently until 2005, with this weird slow crescendo of indifference with some sporadic Wii and PS3 stuff from 2005 until a couple years ago.

Something happened, and I'm not sure I can pinpoint exactly where or when or why it occurred, but at some point, I became completely and utterly jaded with new games.  It was like pulling teeth to get me to play Bioshock.  Bioshock!  And I enjoyed it!  But I didn't even pick the thing up until last summer.

Then this holiday season, I look at the release calendar.  I would be interested in Zelda, had I ever actually played Twilight Princess (I didn't).  Other than this, everything looks like shit.  My roommate bought Skyrim - it looks like shit.  My roommate then traded it in for Dark Souls - looks like shit.  Don't even get me started on Call of Duty 2011: Give us $60, suckers.  Your TV ad can be badass all it wants, I'm not buying your damn game.

I hated FFXIII.  I haven't finished 90% of the games I've bought since 2004.  My computer utterly shuts down when I try to play Starcraft II.  I don't care about MMOs.  Marvel v. Capcom 3 is boring.  The "culture" surrounding gaming these days, well, I just don't have anything in common with those people.  Game Informer is considered a legitimate news source - really?  All the big releases are shooters - I haven't liked a shooter since Timesplitters 3 (Bioshock doesn't count as a shooter).

All the games people like and buy these days suck.

Obligatory photo:
I give up on calling games a hobby, here and now.  While they're always something I'll pick up here and there and look back fondly on, I just can't claim to give two shits about them anymore.

Someone wake me up when a good old school JRPG comes out.  ;_;
